THE paint is barely dry, not all the furniture is in place and some signage still needs to go up.

But there is no doubt the multimillion-dollar Stage 5 redevelopment of the Friendly Society Private Hospital is just weeks away from being operational.

While the project was officially opened at an event last night, it will be another two weeks before it will be open for business.

Two years in the making, the hospital will have increased its size by 70% and increased its bed numbers from 85 to 148.

Hospital CEO Alan Cooper said the redevelopment would be a great asset for the community.

aIt is a very significant expansion of the vision of the board to understanding the needs of the community,a Mr Cooper said.

aTo bring it to this point, it has been a culmination of much input of staff, consultants and the community.

aIt has been two years of building and it is a credit to hospital staff who has managed to work in a construction zone without complaint, while maintaining our standard of care.a

While $30m was allocated for the development, Mr Cooper said final totals were still being calculated and he expected to come in under budget.

aHitting the global financial crisis, we got some better pricing and we were diligent in sticking to the costs and keeping variations contained,a he said.

aAnd with the fit-out we had a fantastic company buyer and purchasing team.a

One of the most anticipated changes is the addition of a cardiac cath lab, the only facility between Brisbane and Townsville, which will be used for cardiac procedures such as diagnostic angiograms.

Mr Cooper said during the next few months the focus would be on getting the intensive care unit operational, a requirement before the cath lab could be used.

aThe equipment for the cath lab has been purchased and will be installed in March,a Mr Cooper said. …
