Mandarin and Wolfson Players Get Field Time at Shrine Bowl

We can never get enough high school football around here, so the annual Shrine Bowl is always a nice touch in January. The 22nd annual matchup of area all-stars was played Saturday at the University of North Florida.

The game featured three Mandarin High seniors, Melvin Williams, Ryan Montez and Harrison Magee, and two from Wolfson, Darrin McPherson and Jovanta Mobley.

All those players were on the North team, which lost to the South team, 29-27. None from Mandarin or Wolfson put up big numbers on the stat sheet, but all saw significant time on the field.


Wolfson basketball fans can get a nice trip down memory lane by checking out the Jacksonville Giants of the American Basketball Association. The team features Antonio Lawrence and Jeremy Grimball, both of whom played under head coach Bruce Rosebrock in high school. Recent ABA foes coming to town have also included former Wolfpack players James Grimball (Jeremy's older brother) and Kenny Walker.

The Giants play at Veterans Memorial Arena and are off to a 12-0 start.


Registration is still going on for Mandarin Sports Association for spring baseball and softball through the end of January. The next two Saturdays will be in-person sign-ups at Alberts Field from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Or, you can register online at Cost ranges from $115 to $150, and it's for youths ages 3-18.

Saturday, Jan. 29, will be a skills assessment. Don't forget the softball teams will be playing at Palmetto Leaves Park on Greenland Road. E-mail with questions.

The same goes for Mandarin Athletic Association, which plays out of Burnett Park. The association has four more on-site registration sessions the next two Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p. …
