STEVEN TAYLOR is convinced Newcastle United are going places.

However, the homegrown defender knows the foundations must continue to be laid gradually.

The Magpies have exceeded pundits' preseason expectations so far in the Premier League, after ex-Sky summariser Andy Gray and BBC pundit Robbie Savage tipped the black-and-whites for relegation in August.

However, Taylor - one of the few survivors of the last Toon team to play in Europe back in 2007 - is only looking in the other direction.

He told the Chronicle: "I have won a Championship, but I want to win a cup and play in Europe where this club should be.

"Why not? With the players we have, there is no reason we cannot in the years to come, but we have to stay in this league first.

"That is our first target. We have talent in this dressing room, and I am positive we will be adding one or two extra faces sooner rather than later."

Taylor has not played since the 5-0 win over West Ham due to a hamstring injury. …
