THE fragility of life was demonstrated in the most painful way to the Woof family 12 months ago today, when their much-loved son and brother, Luke, was killed in a car accident on the Gladstone-Benaraby Road.

A year on, and Ian and Sheryn Woof have endured health problems and another significant loss in the family, but their insistence to stay involved with the community and talk about their son openly has helped them deal with the tragedy.

C[pounds sterling]Our whole life has been upside down, in turmoil, and you just have to try and deal with things the best way you can,C[yen] Sheryn said.

C[pounds sterling]It's hard some days to even focus; Robbie and Sharni, they struggle too.C[yen]

For Ian, the year has been neither quick nor slow and there is no telling what each new day will bring.

C[pounds sterling]It's been a bit of a blur; some days you're all right and some days you're not, there's no set pattern to it ... you can be good for a week and the next day you spend more or less the whole day crying,C[yen] he said.

Brother to Robbie and Sharni, Luke was a profound sporting talent, his natural skill allowing him to grasp any sport he took up, and he excelled to the point of making CQ, Queensland and Australian teams.

Travelling around the region, the Woofs saw the impact their son had on those he met.

C[pounds sterling]It didn't matter where he went he made his mark amongst people and he had a rapport and way with everybody and never had a bad word to say about anybody,C[yen] Sheryn said.

Ian and Sheryn religiously attended the kids' sporting events, and now this is not without its emotional struggle.

C[pounds sterling]I still find it hard, but I come (to cricket) because Robbie's playing and we've known all the guys for years, and it's good to be around them,C[yen] Sheryn said.

C[pounds sterling]But you do think he (Luke) should be out there.

C[pounds sterling]One thing I do notice at different sports, it's a lot quieter, because Luke would go around and stir people, in a good way. …
