THE theft and arson of a dream travelling vehicle have eroded a Coast couple's trust in their own community.

Ray and Kay Hempsall bought their Toyota Landcruiser in 2003 and decked it out with a distinctive custom-made canopy.

They have used it for fishing and travel expeditions into far north Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia for three or four months a year since they bought it.

But on Tuesday, the day before Australia Day, Mrs Hempsall parked at the Noosa Civic shopping centre to get groceries about 3pm.

Less than an hour later the vehicle was gone and by 10pm that night it was found burning in Brisbane, in the Sandgate area.

The thieves took the canopy, winch, bull bar and a new GPS.

aI just went there shopping and some lowlife took our life from us,a Mrs Hempsall said.

aNext to our children, it was the thing we loved the most. Australia's not like it used to be. We're just devastated.

aIt's made us not trust people anymore, it's an invasion of privacy. …
