CRICKET: The boos that met Michael Clarke at the Gabba might have been loud, but Australian teammate John Hastings believes the stand-in skipper's reaction spoke volumes about his character.

And former Test great Doug Walters backed Clarke to silence any remaining critics after responding well to a C[pounds sterling]disappointingC[yen] Brisbane crowd.

Under fire for everything from his bad form to his use of social networking sites, Clarke was jeered by the packed Gabba crowd when he strode to the crease in Sunday's one-day clash with England.

He was taken aback but held his nerve to strike a game-high 54 and help Australia seal a series-clinching 51-run win.

C[pounds sterling]He batted beautifully and showed that he should be captain of Australia while Ricky (Ponting) is out,C[yen] Hastings said in Brisbane yesterday.

But Walters believes Clarke will win back the Australian public by the end of the one-day series, which moves to Sydney tomorrow with Australia holding a 4-1 lead.
