School under Repair

Article excerpt

Byline: Widgee News

REPAIRS are under way at Widgee State School which sustained some damage during the recent heavy rain.

Due to earth movement caused by these torrential downpours, one of the water tanks received damage, and repairs should be completed very soon.

New carpet is being laid in the Prep rooms as they also were badly water damaged. The students are looking forward to moving in their room today.

New enrolments for the year have kept numbers at a steady level with 68 students now on the register.

Principal Rob Lonergan and his Team Widgee have welcomed Chris Tollner to the teaching staff. Chris has taken on the composite class of Years 2, 3 and 4.

THE first Community Cuppa for 2011 got off to a very slow start with just a few stalwarts attending, but numbers steadily increased as the morning wore on. The main topic was the recent heavy rains and flooding throughout the State and more specifically, in the Widgee and Gympie areas.

Several locals reported some overnight rainfalls of up to 170cm (equivalent to about 7 inches in the old measure) and that's a heck of a lot of water.

The highlights for some were watching large water tanks floating downstream, and huge trees hurtling along in the normally placid and gently flowing creeks which instead resembled raging torrents during and after the heavy rains.

Many were pleased to get together with friends and neighbours and discuss their pleasure in being able to get aout and abouta again.

THIRTEEN might be unlucky for some, but it didn't deter Marilyn from climbing to the top of the ladder at Widgee Bowls last Monday.

With 13 players vying for the honours Marilyn outshone them all with a top score of 60 points. Jeanette took second spot with 52 while Margaret was next with 47.

Mary came fourth with 45, nipping Bruce in fifth place on 43. Gloria and Peter tied for sixth with 41 points. Bev won the Free Game draw.
