DRIVING the getaway car for a mate who robbed a taxi-driver at knife-point may have cost Shane James Mackenzie more than just his liberty for seven months.

The 21-year-old father of four had spent seven months in pre-sentence custody before being released on parole yesterday after pleading guilty before Toowoomba District Court to his role in the armed robbery of a taxi-driver in Harlaxton on the evening of May 15 last year.

The court heard Beau Wallace Flegler, 24, had needed to pay off a drug debt at the time and asked Mackenzie to help with a planned armed robbery.

Flegler had called a taxi which drove him to an address where Mackenzie was waiting.

After robbing the taxi driver at knife-point, during which the driver sustained cuts to his hands while struggling with him, Flegler ran to the waiting car and Mackenzie drove them away from the scene, Crown prosecutor Noel Needham told the court. …
