CALOUNDRA's guardians of the beach spent yesterday saving lives.

It was a very different story from seven days earlier when Ithaca Life Saving Club members arrived for duty to find their clubhouse senselessly trashed.

Walls had been punched in and expensive equipment, including a specialist first aid kit worth several hundred dollars, had been stolen.

Food was strewn through the clubhouse kitchen and a screen door ripped from its hinges.

Patrols were reduced to paddle skis and stationery observations because members could not use the four-wheel-drive to launch water patrols due to a tampered ignition.

One week on, the smile on the face of club treasurer and volunteer of 29 years Paul Barry's face was almost as bright as the perfect summer sun yesterday.

aWe are completely gobsmacked by the support of the community who helped us get back on our feet,a Mr Barry said.

Local plasterer Earl Dillon fixed the walls and Caloundra RSL and Henzells Real Estate will pay for the cost to replace three internal doors. …
