Steel Men Pay Rise Is Backdated

HUNDREDS of Teesside workers are set for a pay rise after unions finally agreed a settlement with Tata Steel.

After months of haggling, staff at the company's UK operations will get a 3.2% increase backdated to last April.

The deal includes hundreds of workers who were re-deployed from Redcar to other parts of the business after Tata's Teesside Cast Products (TCP) plant was mothballed last year.

Unions said the deal would apply to workers who re-deployed after April 1, 2010, but before the pay deal was agreed.

Roy Rickhuss, national officer at steel union Community, said: "Re-deployed employees' pay didn't change when the pay rise for 2010/11 was agreed. Their basic rate was increased but their redeployment benefit was cut.

"Tata Steel held that they had applied the re-deployment agreement correctly but we argued that as the anniversary date was April 1, any member re-deployed after this date should receive the pay award.

"If this hadn't been pursued by Community, hundreds of workers across Teesside would have lost out. …
