Urban Flats a Fit for Families or Date Nights

I haven't had the occasion to drive down Touchton Road near Tinseltown for quite a while. I didn't realize how many people live along this road.

This is relevant because it means there are a great many people who are happy about having an Urban Flats Flatbread and Wine Company open in their neighborhood.

Having been to the Urban Flats in Ponte Vedra Beach several times, I know the restaurant is a blend of unique appetizers, hearty entrees and its signature flat bread gourmet pizzas. After the dinner hour, Urban Flats is a nightspot that offers music and drink specials.

Its open, factory-style decor of cement floors and high ceilings does make Urban Flats a loud restaurant. The cries of one disgruntled child can be heard throughout the restaurant. Later in the evening when full, I imagine it is quite noisy.

While this Urban Flats shares many attributes with the one in Ponte Vedra, wine fans will be disappointed to learn that the Touchton Road restaurant offers everything on its two-for-one happy hour except wine by the glass. This is unfortunate because the wine program is good, and this is one restaurant chain that serves wine by the glass at the proper temperature.

Urban Flats is known for its pizza. The crust is thin and oblong but offers a bit of bite rather than being cracker crisp. They are big enough for two to share, but if hungry, you'll want to order one per person. The flats include Fig and Prosciutto ($9), The Black and Blue with steak and blue cheese ($10.50), Buffalo Chicken, ($8.50) and AntIpasti ($10).

As we were familiar with the chain's take on pizza we focused on the rest of the menu. The appetizers aren't the usual fare. The Fried Green Tomatoes ($9.50) could work as a dinner salad. One person at our table said she'd order that as her dinner next trip. It's three thinly sliced, lightly battered green tomatoes in a bowl of fresh and crispy arugula with ample chunks of lump crab served in a green goddess dressing.

Baked Cheese and Tomato ($8.50) is a round of creamy goat cheese placed in the middle of a bowl of tomato bisque, served with garlic toast. …
