WITH a title that screams for a question mark, How Do You Know follows the plight of plucky and spirited Lisa, played by Reese Witherspoon, who is coming to terms with being cut from her softball team.

She dates a baseball star and playboy, Matty (Owen Wilson), who keeps a drawer full of spare toothbrushes and pink tracksuits for his many female house guests.

Then there's George (Paul Rudd), whose life is falling apart after finding out he is being investigated for corporate fraud. And like the path so many romantic comedies have trodden before, so a sketchy love triangle forms.

The problem with this romantic comedy is it doesn't quite manage to squeeze much love or laughs from its characters' interactions.

There are some moments of fantastic witty and sparkling dialogue and some instances of genuine humour but it isn't quite strong enough to stretch the whole length of the film without sagging in the middle.

Pop psychology and bumper sticker wisdom peppers the script throughout and treads a thin line between cheesy and clichE[umlaut], and insightful and inspiring. …
