A SHOVEL-WIELDING would-be robber who botched the theft of a pounds 20,000 cash box at a supermarket cash machine is now behind bars.

John Forajter was denied the money after a quick-thinking guard threw the box on to the roof of the Sainsbury's store.

Forajter had picked up a snow shovel and used it to threaten a transit crew filling up the Sainsbury's ATM, Teesside Crown Court heard.

The 32-year-old, on a cocktail of alcohol and medication, launched the bungled robbery bid at 8.15am on December 10 last year. But he left empty-handed after Martin Corkindale threw the money container on to the roof.

Prosecutor Conor Quinn said Forajter tried in vain to get up to retrieve the box. The defendant then rode away from the Vaughan Shopping Centre, in Fosdyke Green, Netherfields, Middlesbrough on his bike. Police caught him moments later.

Forajter, of Crossfell Road, Berwick Hills, appeared in court via video link to Holme House, Stockton, and pleaded guilty to attempted robbery - a crime committed while on licence from a four-and-a-half-year burglary sentence. …
