New trends emerge each year influencing everything from sinks and soap dispensers to carpets and couches.

Creating a fresh and contemporary look is not about adopting every new trend to hit the market, nor does it have to break the budget.

Terri Caldwell, an interior designer and decorator for 15 years, has worked with leading Australian and international furniture and home ware companies.

She explained that most trends originate in Europe and have a trickle effect across the market.

Painting a feature wall, adding some cushions, updating curtains and even rearranging your furniture can make a difference to the look and most importantly, feel of your home. Terri agreed, adding that athe biggest mistake that many people make is decorating their home based purely on visual appeal. Buying a lounge that looks fabulous is pointless if you can't sit on it for more than 20 minutes because it's not comfortable.a

Comfort, practicality and individual style are important influences when it comes to your home design and decorating choices.

Terri said that giving your home a modern look, whether it's an established home or brand new, is easier than you'd think.
