Former Nurse Says Thankyou with Gift of Pounds 100k; Hospital Is Left Money in Will

A FORMER nurse thanked the hospital staff who cared for her late husband by leaving pounds 100,000 to its renal unit.

Susan Ethel Sutcliffe made the generous bequest in her will in appreciation of the treatment given to her late husband Jack.

Mrs Sutcliffe, of Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, was 98 when she passed away in August.

Jack, who is believed to have met his wife while they both served in the RAF in Palestine shortly after the Second World War, had been treated for kidney stones and cancer of the kidneys.

Mrs Sutcliffe, who served in the Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service, rose to the rank of wing officer - the equivalent of a wing commander.

She also spent a long time as a member of the Red Cross and worked as a nurse and qualified midwife at Leeds General Infirmary. Once married, she left nursing and moved to Middlesbrough, where Mr Sutcliffe worked as a solicitor.

The couple had no children and, after Mr Sutcliffe died in 2004, it is believed Mrs Sutcliffe's generous bequest was made in appreciation for the care he received at James Cook University Hospital's renal unit. …
