Hamilton Still Shines despite Tough Times Hamilton Appealing to Cross-Section of World Market

THERE is no denying that Hamilton Island sells itself.

It is one of the beautiful gems of the Whitsundays, and that is why tourists from here and overseas continue to flock to the island destination.

According to Hamilton Island CEO Glenn Bourke, who was recently featured in HM Magazine's 2011 Industry Leaders Forum Issue, Hamilton Island was entering 2011 on the back of an extremely strong year.

aWe finished the financial year 2010 on June 30 ahead of budget and room nights which was a great result considering the downturn,a he said.

aOur biggest challenge right now as an industry of course is the strength of the Australian dollar which will make us a more expensive destination for international visitors.

aCoupled with recent forecasts for another year of flat domestic visitation this will continue to challenge us.

aHaving said this, we remain optimistic that as we enter the next six months our performance will continue to remain solid.a

Mr Bourke said the opportunities for Hamilton Island were numerous including that Australian travellers continued to see the island as an easily accessed, good year-round destination and a great stepping stone to witness the marvels of the Great Barrier Reef.

Along with the high occupancy levels Mr Bourke said the opening of the Hamilton Island Yacht Club Villas early last year allowed the island to present a luxury offering for the family market that sits very comfortably alongside qualia.

aThe luxury end of the market has continued to go from strength to strength for us with qualia having three of the busiest back-to-back months from October through to December since the resort opened in 2007.

aThis has come from domestic travellers who have continued to enjoy visiting qualia for milestone occasions and who also value the calibre of events we offer at the property. …
