PHIL AIREY is hoping to catch the eye this week at the Coppa Carnevale youth tournament in Italy.

The young Magpies squad jetted off yesterday for the competition.

They will first take on Fiorentina tomorrow, then Paraguayan Club Nacional and Lecce in the group stages, with progress to the knockout round meaning a potential stay in Italy until March 7. Striker Airey was in a 13-man squad which included exciting playmaker Haris Vuckic and forgotten man Fabio Zamblera.

The 20-year-old joined Newcastle three years ago, but has so far failed to make the grade after a series of injury setbacks.

Amble-born Airey - who has just recovered from a hamstring injury - told the Chronicle: "The manager has told us to go out and impress him.

"That has been my brief this season - to catch the eye and get on the fringes of the first team.

"If I can do that and get near the bench for the first team it will be great for me.

"There has been talk of going out on loan too. …
