Glory Bid Is All Set to Succeed

Article excerpt

YORK GLORY can give the former partnership of Kevin Ryan and Neil Callan a winner in the At The Races Virgin 534 Maiden Stakes (4.55) at Lingfield.

The trainer and jockey used to be a fail-safe option for punters in the north and many would have backed them blind over the years.

However, recent seasons have seen Callan base himself down south as second jockey to Michael Jarvis and when the veteran Newmarket handler retired last week, Callan got the top job for his successor Roger Varian.

Even before that, Ryan had moved to make the capable Phillip Makin his stable jockey and the pair have already had a good start to their association.

But with Makin not in action on Tuesday, the Thirsk handler has gone back to what he knows and York Glory looks a likely winner after a very promising debut.

Sent off favourite, he had obviously shown plenty at home but was slowly away and green turning into the straight.

He finished third in that race but you would like to think that with the benefit of experience he would have won.

Andrew Balding's Queen O'The Desert sets a fair standard but Ryan's horses generally improve a great deal for their initial run.

Alan Swinbank's Bosambo will surely never have a better chance of breaking his duck than in the ATR Maiden Stakes (4.20).

Only four are set to go to post and one of those has never beaten a rival in three starts. One other, Balding's Viking Dancer, has shown a decent level of ability but has not run for 518 days so it leaves it as a shoot-out between the selection and Uncle Dermot, who has not shown that much in all fairness.

Bosambo has gradually improved with racing and finished second last time out to earn a rating of 77, which is probably too high, but leaves him well treated in this.

John Best's Officer Lily is a speculative selection for the Visit attheraces. …
