Volunteer 'S Bridging the Green Gap

AS an unpaid tenant member of the board at South Tyneside Homes, Joyce Welsh has campaigned tirelessly on green issues on behalf of the company.

She was unanimously appointed board environmental champion in 2009 and has continued to give her all.

Joyce, 58, from South Shields, plays a key role in advising staff and tenants on reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption.

Joyce was awarded the Environmental Individual Award sponsored by Gentoo.

She said: "I'm delighted to win the award and very proud. I'm grateful to Nick Huston and Leon Cowley from South Tyneside Homes who nominated me and who work hard on these issues."

Joyce pledged to carry on her work which she gets so much enjoyment from.

"We can pass on important messages to others but we have a lot of fun while we're doing it," she said.

"If I can make a slight difference with what I do I will be happy."
