To be successful, the artist must blend the way they challenge and manoeuvre through their chosen medium with how they explore ideas to achieve a work that seems totally believable and a[approximately]real' and yet is unsettling and demanding of the viewer.a

According to Kevin Wilson, the former director of Noosa Regional Gallery and now director of the Brisbane-based Artworkers Alliance, Sunshine Coast artist Meaghan Shelton is one artist who is successful in this way.

Shelton graduated with a painting major from the Fine Art Faculty of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in early 2000, and has continued to develop her fine painting skills from her Coast base.

Wilson will open Shelton's new exhibition, Becomings, at the Cooroy Butter Factory on April 29, and the show will run until May 21. The exhibition presents a new body of paintings that continues to explore the rigour and tradition of painting, and is steeped in the connections between the domestic and natural worlds, and Shelton's intrigue with the hidden aspects of the feminine unconscious. …
