Northern Sinfonia plays Bond at The Sage Gateshead WHAT a fantastic concert - and what a triumph for those who bang the drum for senior citizens!

Conductor Carl Davis, like a musical wizard in first gold cape and then electric blue, is 75 this year but sharp of eye and wit.

And Honor Blackman, a stunning Pussy Galore in Goldfinger? The muttering around me in a near-packed Hall One was along the lines of "She must be into her 70s now".

Ms Blackman, who looked like a lovely matriarchal mermaid in glittering silver and then black tight-fitting sparkly dresses, is a spry 85.

She introduced each of the 22 Bond numbers with expert insights. And she only said one wrong thing, in my estimation.

At the start she promised a concert that would leave us "shaken but not stirred".

But we were stirred - by the brilliant playing of the Northern Sinfonia, augmented by a little front-of-stage drum and guitar combo, and the singing of Mary Carewe who stepped into the vocal skin of a succession of Bond movie divas. …
