Under 19 Fire to Kick off at Home; Calls for Gympie to Support Team in Big Debut Match

THE curtain is about to go up on the Gympie Under 19 Fire team's opening match in the Queensland State Youth League.

Gympie's latest football side, under English coach Greg Plumb, kicks off its campaign this Saturday afternoon at home against Southern Cross United.

The luck of the draw has given the Gympie Fire outfit a generous start to the season. Both of the team's opening two rounds are to be played at home.

After tackling Southern Cross United this weekend, the Fire returns next Saturday to do battle with the Logan Strikers.

Football Gympie president Trevor Kirk said having both rounds at home would allow the Fire team a chance to settle in familiar surrounds before hitting the road to play away.

Kirk also encouraged the Gympie public to show their solidarity with the team by filling the stands and cheering loudly.

It was a call for support echoed by new coach Plumb, who has only been in Gympie a matter of weeks to coach the side after flying out from England late last month.

Plumb is not hiding his ambition for the new season, hoping for a top four finish on the ladder after the final round to launch the team into the preliminary finals.

aIt's a new side and there will be a settling-in period, but we have the talent and with hard work it's a goal we can achieve,a he said.

The coach is finding his feet in Gympie and has been overwhelmed with the friendly atmosphere of the town.

aI'm still learning where everything is, but people are very friendly,a he said.

The friendly, laid-back nature of Plumb won't be on show this Saturday for the match against Southern Cross United.

The coach is determined for a good showing and it will be down to business from the moment the Gympie boys run out from the sheds and take their place on Field 1.

Saturday's match between the Gympie Under 19 Fire and Southern Cross United kicks off on Field 1 at the One Mile Ovals from 3pm.
