A JUDGE who rugby-tackled a rapist as he tried to escape from his court said he would do it again.

Judge Douglas Marks Moore, 61, leapt from the bench in his wig and robes to stop Paul Reid's fourth escape attempt.

The serial sex attacker was in the middle of a rape trial when he was apprehended by the judge, a former Irish Guardsman. Judge Marks Moore played down his bravery but said: "I would not hesitate to do it again.

"You cannot allow a person who has escaped in the past and raped someone to escape again without trying to stop him. It doesn't matter if you are a judge or not. You are just doing the right thing."

Reid, 34, was today jailed for life at the Old Bailey, with a minimum six years and three months before he can apply for parole. He was first convicted in 1997 at the age of 21, for raping a teenage girl, for which he was sent to a young offender institution for six years.

Four years later he escaped and was given six months when caught. …
