Drink-Drive Turned Life Upside Down

POLICE received several 000 phone calls from witnesses after they saw a car upside down in a stormwater drain just near the Northern Beaches Bowls Club in February.

The driver was 40-year-old Geena Pantelic who had a blood alcohol reading of 0.199%.

The Mackay Magistrates Court was told she was able to get out of the vehicle and walk about 100 metres up Eimeo Road before police located her.

Police were called to the potential emergency at 12.15am on Sunday, February 27, with reports that a car was on its roof in a stormwater drain, prosecutor Constable Janelle Young said.

Pantelic admitted consuming five glasses of wine and about 10 pots of beer at the bowls club.

She said she had driven off, misjudged a corner and rolled her car into a drain.

The court heard that Pantelic had one previous conviction for a drink-driving offence.

Duty solicitor Nikki King, of Legal Aid Queensland, said Pantelic admitted having a problem with alcohol. …
