CRICKET: Ed Cowan has NSW regretting its decision to release him to Tasmania, having batted the Tigers to within touching distance of their second Sheffield Shield title.

Cowan, who moved to Tasmania at the start of last season, compiled a magnificent 133 against his old side as the Tigers finished day three at Bellerive Oval on 6-411, just 29 runs shy of the Blues' first-innings total.

Butterworth, who has a happy knack of batting well in finals, was unbeaten on 74, with young wicketkeeper Tom Triffitt on 13.

Rain is forecast for day five and the Tigers need only to draw to win the Shield, meaning the Blues will need quick wickets and runs today if they are to have any chance of claiming the title.
