Acting on Moments of Illumination Can Be Embarrassing

Article excerpt

HAVE you seen the movie Bucket List?

I saw it when it first came out and remember thinking I would need a pretty big bucket to do all things I want before I check out.

Then I forgot all about it ... until recently.

I was up in Townsville a few weeks ago for a footy meeting which went all day Saturday followed by dinner and a few beers that night.

I decided to walk home on a beautiful, balmy NQ night where the humidity was nearly in three figures.

We were staying at the foot of Castle Hill which, in my view, is more like a mountain and wisely my colleagues cabbed it.

For the first time in my life I realised that a simple thing like walking up a hill was a struggle and I very nearly never made it home, which sounds ridiculous but is sadly true.

The next morning I reassured myself it must have been the jeans, the long sleeve shirt and the 10 schooners I had so I set off to climb the rock just to prove that everything was okay.

The aptly named Goat Track is about 1.25km straight up the side of the rock and off I went, with sun blazing down.

About halfway up I realised that I wasn't mistaken, I was actually a fat unfit lump that wouldn't be out of place on Biggest Loser.

So much so that about halfway up I must have looked that distressed that those who passed me were offering words of encouragement that sounded unsubstantiated but were probably said in the hope that, as a taxpayer, they were saving money if I made it rather than getting choppered off.

For the record, I did make it and decided to sit under a tree and take it all in and nearly passed out.

It was then that my bucket list surfaced Co a fairly simple one at that.

Lose weight Co been there before.

Get fit Co ditto.

Start surfing again Co knee boarder, can do.

Learn how to ride a racing ski Co massive question mark. …
