COMPETITION is heating up for the region's top job as the long list of applicants for the position of Fraser Coast council chief has been narrowed down to just six.

Yesterday a council spokesman confirmed all 56 applicants had been screened by employment consultants The Brooklyn Group and a short list of six had been handed over for the final stage of interviews.

The spokesman also confirmed acting chief executive Lisa Desmond was in the mix.

The interview panel will be made up of one of the consultants, mayor Mick Kruger, deputy mayor Julie Arthur, Councillor David Dalgleish and a C[pounds sterling]community representativeC[yen].

So far the salary package that will be offered to the incumbent has not been disclosed but it is understood former chief Andrew Brien, who now heads the Bunbury council in Western Australia, was worth about $280,000.

While the powerful position has its perks, controversy has plagued predecessors not only in regards to the Fraser Coast Regional Council but also both pre and post amalgamation. …
