BASIL Gilmore's passion for beer bottles is only exceeded by his fondness for the amber ale which comes in them.

But even he admits his collection of more than 4000 beer bottles has got a little out of hand.

That's why the long-time home brewer has decided to sell at least a quarter of his along necksa, which are stored in his carport and under tarpaulins in the backyard of his Kyogle home.

aI'd have somewhere approaching 4300 bottles and I hope to get rid of about 1000,a Mr Gilmore said.

aI've been collecting them forever and have all sorts. I've got bottles from Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and even from Western Australia. I've got bottles from Grafton, I've got a rare Pick Axe bottle and about six dozen very old XXXX bottles.a

Mr Gilmore has bottles dating back to 1946.

He has bought the bottles from other collectors, salvaged them from recycling centres, scavenged them from garbage tips and even exchanged quail eggs for them. …
