Jade Ready to 'Seize the Day' If He Gets His Chance

ONE of the many tattoos on Jade Dernbach's arms is an exhortation to 'seize the day' - and he intends to do just that if he gets his chance in England's World Cup quarter-final against Sri Lanka.

The Surrey seamer, who will be 25 the day after the Mumbai final of this competition, took a circuitous route into cricket.

Originally interested exclusively in playing rugby in his native South Africa, it was only after moving with his family to England as a teenager that he realised the summer sport was also an option.

Barely three years later, Dernbach became one of Surrey's youngest ever debutants.

But it has taken him another eight to even approach the fringes of an England squad - and when the selectors named him last week as their replacement for the injured Ajmal Shahzad, there was a double-take even in some wellinformed circles.

Yet Dernbach, identified as the ideal choice in these conditions because of his repertoire of slower balls and command of reverse-swing, could easily be in the team to take on the co-hosts at the Premadasa Stadium this weekend. …
