Speed Sets Record Straight on Bale Injury

WALES manager Gary Speed yesterday faced the media to nip in the bud any suggestion of a club-versus-country row with Tottenham over Gareth Bale's fitness.

The Spurs winger withdrew from the Wales squad for tomorrow's eagerly-anticipated Euro 2012 qualifier against England in Cardiff with a hamstring injury. Wales have revealed that Bale was unable to train this week because of the problem and Speed has now decided he cannot be risked.

Confusion arose, however, after reports yesterday morning claiming the 21-yearold (pictured right) pulled up in training on Wednesday were commented upon by Wales assistant manager Raymond Verheijen via his Twitter account. Verheijen wrote: "This morning there will be an official statement by Gary Speed about the situation with Gareth Bale. The incompetent amateurs struck again!" It was followed by another comment which read: "Funny to read about Gareth Bale injuring his hamstring in training yesterday ... as he did not train at all yesterday. …
