ROLF Harris is causing a stir on Tyneside. The Australian entertainer and artist has come to Newcastle for an exhibition.

A queue of fans snaked around Whitewall Galleries in Grey Street yesterday. The lucky ones who met him were treated to a chat and an autograph. But despite it being invitation only, there were more than 300 people waiting to meet the man and then have a look at his work.

The exhibition showed off some of his newer pieces as well as his more traditional pictures of tigers and other wild animals.

Alongside them were paintings of Venice, while a picture of a hot river scene in Egypt vied for wall space with a contrasting picture of a winter view of a person struggling through the snow.

Anyone wanting a memento of their evening would need pretty deep pockets.

A dainty pencil sketch of a hand was on offer for pounds 2,539. And anyone who had a loose pounds 196,000 in their back pocket could buy a scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream featuring actress Emer Kenny, which Rolf, who will be 81 on Wednesday, painted during a BBC programme. …
