Doubles on the Rise at the Beck

Article excerpt

TROUT TOPICS ANGLERS are returning big trout to LOCKWOOD ensuring that the number of doubles is increasing, as more will be stocked in the coming weeks.

John McGarrell caught 27 trout from a boat, including an 11lb rainbow which he slipped back. All his fish fell to size 12 Black Buzzers and Diawl Bach.

Big buzzer hatches are attracting the trout, which partially explains why rod averages have reached over 12 at times.

John Parkers caught 21 trout, all on Buzzers, while Andrew Grabham tempted 37 on the pattern.

Glen Thompson caught rainbows to 10lb and 7lb, while his dad Keith caught a 5lb brown.

Ian Vickers caught 22 from a boat, the best an over-wintered rainbow of 10lb 8oz.

Over 200 more fish have been stocked this week, and the water level continues to rise after maintenance work.

Rain will bring it up more quickly, though the lower level is not affecting sport, as the fishing is superb.

Many anglers appear to be waiting until the reservoir is full before making a visit, however that leaves additional bank space for those who are fishing at present. BRIAN LEES from Teesville caught browns of 6lb 8oz and 4lb 8oz at SCALING DAM.

Both fish fell to a Kate McLaren, and were returned as they were caught just before the season for browns opened.

Despite some cold, heavy fog, bait and fly anglers have had a good week.

The biggest fish of week, a rainbow of 8lb 7oz, was caught on the south shore on Yellow PowerBait by Frank Jackson from Saltburn.

Other rainbows of 8lb 6oz and 7lb 8oz have been caught in a week in which 125 anglers caught 402 fish.

A variety of fly patterns, especially Dawson's Olive, Muddler, Kate McLaren, Viva, and Hopper are accounting for fish and a slow retrieve has been the best method.

Bait anglers have caught on Orange PowerBait Eggs, Sunshine Yellow PowerBait, Worm, maggot and sweetcorn. TERRY Sharp of Middlesbrough caught three doubles at LEIGHTON.

Dawson's Olive, Cat's Whisker and black and green lures have all caught plenty of fish, with the bay and the valley being favourite areas.

There's a 'double a day' plan at the Yorkshire Dales reservoir, with at least one double figure fish stocked for each day until the end of April. …
