LISMORE Workers and Byron Bay have progressed to the second round of the Northern NSW Solo Cup soccer knockout, but Goonellabah was knocked out in the opening round at Coffs Harbour on Saturday.

Workers had a tense 1-0 win over Urunga thanks to a goal from Josh O'Driscoll midway through the first half.

O'Driscoll drilled a left-foot finish from just inside the box, but the Redmen had to do a lot of defending in the second half as Urunga used a strong wind to launch long-ball attacks.

Lanky striker Batok Thonkol used his blistering pace to good effect, with midfielders Jamie Hill and Kurt Walker and defender Paddy Kable also having strong games in Workers' debut appear-ance in the Cup.

Super sub Ryan Gray was the hero for Byron Bay in a 2-1 win over Coffs Coast Lions, coming on early in the second half and banging in two goals within five min-utes.

Gray ran on to through balls to catch the tiring Coffs defence napping for both goals, but a late goal from the Lions gave the Rams a few nervous minutes. …
