MP Faces Rushed Call; Early Election May Force Springborg to Hasten Family Discussions on Future in Politics

LOCAL Member Lawrence Springborg may not have quite as much time as he'd hoped to discuss with his family whether to stand again for election in the Southern Downs.

As the LNP soars in front in the opinion polls, the suggestion of an early election lingers this week.

Mr Springborg's shock decision to step down as Deputy Leader of the Opposition last week, following his leader John-Paul Langbroek's resignation, has pumped the rumour mill into overdrive as to whether the local lad will give it up for good.

In an interview with the Daily News, Mr Springborg said he was uncomfortable with the party's decision to push for Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman as leader from outside parliament.

He said Mr Langbroek was a C[pounds sterling]gentleman politicianC[yen] and he should have been a C[pounds sterling]gentleman Premier.C[yen]

Mr Langbroek said he would recontest his Surfers Paradise seat, while Mr Springborg vowed to continue to represent the people of Southern Downs for now.

While a recent poll showed only 31 percent of Queenslander wanted to go for an early election, 56 percent of people believed Campbell Newman should remain Brisbane Lord Mayor to complete the flood recovery.

Queenslanders appear to be supporting Newman with another poll suggesting the LNP would have a landslide victory at the next state election, putting LNP ahead 58-42.

At the weekend, another high-profile Bligh Government Minister, Stephen Robertson, confirmed he would bow out of politics at the next election.

Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten and Local Government Minister Desley Boyle also announced they would quit their portfolios and would retire from politics at the 2012 election. …
