Fishing a Bit Slow at Last Weekend's Wahoo Challenge

The Conch House held its second Wahoo Challenge out of Salt Run Friday and Saturday. The fishing was pretty slow with just eight of the 26 boats that fished the event weighing wahoo.

But there was a beautiful 82.6-pound fish caught aboard the Knock Down. They fished north, finding 73 degree water. They added a 37.2-pounder to bring their aggregate weight to 119.8 pounds. A few small dolphin were caught. Three blue marlin were reported released Sunday east of St. Augustine.

The excellent surf fishing a week ago fell off as surf temperatures dropped again. The past week was very slow. But the whiting showed up again Monday after several days of warm weather. Equipment needs are minimal. A rod, reel, 3-ounce sinker and a small long-shank hook is all you need. Just add fresh dead shrimp and water.

Pompano were being caught around New Smyrna. They will move steadily north as our water temperatures warm up. Seventy degrees is a magic number for great pompano fishing.

On the freshwater, Palatka's Terry Scroggins nearly pulled off a come-from-behind win in the Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament out of Palatka. He was edged out on the final day Sunday by Oklahoma's Edwin Evers who won with a four-day total of 77 pounds, 1 ounce. Scroggins was second with 74 pounds, 3 ounces.

The bluegill and shellcracker fishing has been very good all along the St. Johns River. Speckled perch did not seem to respond immediately to the big full moon Saturday. The bedding bass may not be the same for a while after being pursued by 100 of the best bass anglers in the nation all week long.

In the Intracoastal Waterway, fishing has been good. The speckled trout bite was excellent up near Mayport with big strings of legal fish coming in - mainly from clean waters near the inlets. We should have that here soon. …
