ARTS bosses and MPs in Northumberland yesterday tried to put a brave face on the news, which impacted heavily on the county.

Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick Sir Alan Beith said he was saddened by the news that the Northumberland Theatre Company, based in Alnwick, would lose its Arts Council funding from 2012/13.

But he welcomed the announcement that Berwick's Maltings Theatre and Arts Centre is to receive increased funding, while Conservative MP for Hexham Guy Opperman applauded the council's decision to give more money to the town's Queen's Hall Arts.

Northumberland County Council meanwhile has offered to work with arts organisations in the county following the announcement of the funding allocations to help them plan for the future.

Sir Alan said: "I raised the issue of funding for Northumberland's arts bodies with Liz Forgan, the chairman of the Arts Council, recently. The announcement is certainly good news for the Maltings in Berwick but very disappointing for the joint bid put forward by Alnwick Playhouse and Northumberland Touring Company (NTC). …
