Gary Finds His Niche at Power Stations; OBITUARY

THE funeral service of Gary Matthews was held at the Boyne Tannum Memorial Parklands Crematorium Chapel, Boyne Island.

Mr Matthews, formerly of Barrine Close, died at St Andrew's Hospital in Brisbane, aged 57.

Born in Maryborough in 1953, Mr Matthews was the youngest of four children.

At school he was an above average student excelling in the C[pounds sterling]three Rs' as well as the sciences.

Eventually he took a fitting and turning apprenticeship at Howard Power Station.

One of his greatest passions throughout his life was rugby league and he considered all other codes, especially Australian Rules, as inferior.

He developed lifelong friendships on the field.

In Gladstone he continued his involvement in the game by coaching Brothers Football Club, imparting his knowledge to kids from Under 7 through to the teenage years.

By the age of 21, he met his future wife, Rae.

They married in August 1975 then moved to Brisbane where he went to Mt Gravatt College of Advanced Education to study to become a Manual Arts teacher. …
