Nerimbera Sidesteps Sniffers' Rehab Centre; Locals Want Disused School as Community Meeting Site

A PROPOSAL to run one of the world's first rehabilitation centres for paint and petrol sniffers in a former Rockhampton school has been dropped.

Margaret Hornagold, chief executive of Darumbal Youth Services said yesterday the organisation would not pursue its plan to use Nerimbera State School to treat young sniffers.

The school, which closed at the end of 2008 because of a lack of pupils and has been empty since, will be disposed of later this year and tenders are being invited.

Ms Hornagold said her organisation had identified the school as an ideal location for its volatile system misuse program and had indicated its interest.

But now it was looking at other options.

aNerimbera residents have indicated that they want the school as a community centre. We put our hands up for it when there was nobody else interested, but it is clear the residents don't want a facility down there that caters for the people we are dealing with. …
