Pensioner Angry at Attack on Native Trees

A MARCOOLA pensioner is furious at the destruction by council of coastal banksias planted a decade ago by residents as part of the revegetation of native species.

Reg O'Reilly, a former Marcoola Progress Association president who has lived in the area 30 years, said there was no warning given before the destruction took place early Tuesday morning.

He had come off the beach where he had been walking his dog to discover the council gang in full swing.

aI was a bit upset about it and still am,'' Mr O'Reilly said. aThey threatened to call the police when I was taking photos.

aThey even ground away the stumps. There is now no indication there was ever a tree there.''

Mr O'Reilly said he had originally planted pine trees on the site 30 years ago.

With the assistance of then councillor Errol Middlebrook, the pines were removed and a progress association working bee revegetated with natives that provided habitat for birds. …
