Councillors' allowances to increase by a third BASIC allowances for councillors in Middlesbrough were set to rise by 33%. Middlesbrough Council said that despite the rise, the basic allowances paid to its 53 councillors would still be the lowest on Teesside. All Middlesbrough councillors currently receive a basic allowance of pounds 2,250.
