WARWICK cowboy Michael Maher is only one day away from the opportunity to realise his dream.

Maher is competing in the saddle bronc classification at the National Rodeo Finals on the Gold Coast and is only five rides away from becoming the Australian champion.

Originally scheduled for early January, the national finals had to be rescheduled to April following the devastating floods. After originally qualifying for the January event, Maher has had to wait for three months to get his first shot at winning the Australian title.

Maher is ranked 13th in the national saddle bronc standings, but prior results count for little at nationals.

Each of the 15 riders to qualify for the event will be given five rides with the championship going to the best performing rider.

Maher knows it will take a huge effort to win the title, but he insists he is not just there to make up the numbers.
