Verger Denies Sexual Assaulting an Altar Boy

A VERGER of Newcastle's St Nicholas Cathedral took to the stand yesterday to deny allegations of sexually assaulting an altar boy.

Colin James Adams, 58, is said to have stalked the schoolboy chorister after becoming infatuated with him before eventually having sex with him on the steps of a church vestry.

Adams was yesterday accused by prosecutors at Cardiff Crown Court of abusing his position by hiding under a "cloak of respectability". Sue Ferrier, prosecuting, questioned Adams about claims he first assaulted the boy, who is now in his late 30s, during a visit to London's Southwark Cathedral.

"In a secluded section of the cathedral you touched him inappropriately didn't you?" she said.

To which Adams answered: "No, in a building such as Southwark Cathedral there would always be staff around."

Ms Ferrier then asked about allegations Adams would appear as the boy walked home from school with the hope of satisfying his "physical desires". …
