GOLF: Tiger Woods is confident he can win the Masters after shooting an opening round one-under par 71 which left him six strokes off the pace.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy leads after a 65 but Woods, who struggled to sink clutch putts when he needed them most, believes he is pouncing distance.

Despite having slid from World No.1 to seventh in the rankings, Woods believes he can end the victory drought on the famed Augusta National layout where he has won four green jackets.

aIt's a long way to go. We have a long grind ahead of us,a Woods said. aThe temperature's supposed to warm up and I'm sure they will start making the pins a little more difficult as the week goes on.
