Sun Shines on an Army of Anglers; TROUT TOPICS

Article excerpt

WARM, sunny weather has led to fish quickly switching to imitative patterns.

Lures are still taking fish, but many successful anglers are catching on nymphs and dries.

At LOCKWOOD BECK John McGarrell caught 21 rainbows from the high bank and wood side on Damsel, Buzzers and Daiwl Bach.

And Daniel Jefferson caught 17 rainbows from along the wood side bank, with most of his fish on small Buzzers and dries.

Some nice doubles are being caught most weeks, and there are no particular hotspots for them, so roving anglers have as good a chance as those fishing one spot.

Billy Wilson caught a rainbow of 15lb 5oz. BILL Mackenzie from Billingham enjoyed his first session of the season at SCALING DAM, catching his eight fish limit on worm and PowerBait fished from the disabled jetty.

Fly anglers have had fish on Invicta, Kate McLaren, Cat's Whisker, and Green Peter in a week in which 105 anglers caught 285 trout to 3lb 8oz. A further 560 have been stocked. WEST HOUSE is holding a tagged fish weekend on April 16 and 17.

The lakes will be stocked with a number of tagged fish which carry prizes including whisky, rod, day tickets, and fly boxes. There is a free barbecue and hot and cold drinks over the two days.

Rainbows to 16lb 10oz have been caught, with several other doubles in a lively week.

Black Buzzers fished around a foot below the surface have taken a lot of fish.

John Peters of Darlington caught an 11lb rainbow, as well as a 6lb brown on Mill Lake, both to fry patterns.

BEN Race of Great Ayton caught a rainbow of 14lb 7oz at LEIGHTON RESERVOIR.

He offered a Zonker to catch the biggest fish of the week from a venue where 166 anglers caught 781 fish, including four doubles in a good week.

Lures dominate here, especially Fritz, Dawson's, Cat's Whisker, Viva and Zonkers, though some fish have been taken on Buzzers and wets.
