RUGBY LEAGUE: Wests and Brothers maintained their unbeaten 4BU/Hitz FM A-Grade Premiership records with tough third-round wins on Saturday.

Wests staved off Easts 28-24 at Salter Oval, while the Brethren emerged from C[pounds sterling]The FurnaceC[yen] with a 30-28 victory over hosts Isis Devils at Childers Showgrounds.

At the other end of the table, Across The Waves are on no points after they were put to the sword by Hervey Bay Seagulls, who posted their first win for 2011, romping home 44-12.

Wests president Shane Martin was delighted after they completed their best start to an A-Grade season for a long time and posted three wins in a row for the first time since their last premiership year of 2006, but he said they dropped their guard after starting really strongly.

C[pounds sterling]If we had kept our foot on the pedal, the way we started in the first 20 minutes to lead 18-4, we would have come away with a much larger victory,C[yen] Martin said.

In the end, both sides scored five tries, but the boot of halfback Josh Tanner was the difference as he kicked four goals to Magpies' player-co-coach Josh Essex's two.

C[pounds sterling]We were disappointed we let them back into it with penalties and a few dropped balls early in the tackle counts, and it ended up a tight one, but it showed we can win tight ones now,C[yen] Martin said.

C[pounds sterling]It showed we can defend our line because we gave them plenty of opportunities late in the game, but it was probably a game we needed because the first two games we won without a hard struggle at the end.C[yen]

Martin said Tanner was their best, while his younger brother Jared was among the scorers and his elder brother Corey was strong off the bench.

C[pounds sterling]Michael Morris also played really well again after starting in the front row Co he did get sent to the bin for 10 minutes early in the game but when he came back on, he made up it, and (front rower) Terry Franks, another club junior, was another of our best,C[yen] he said. …
