41st Called Up for Duty in East Timor; Lismore-Based Battalion to Keep Peace

SOLDIERS from the Lismore-based 41st Battalion of the Royal NSW Regiment are preparing to be deployed to Timor-Leste.

In the first major overseas commitment for the reservist battalion for years, a company making up about 100 soldiers will be deployed to the former Indonesian colony.

While the Department of Defence failed to respond to questions about the 41st's operations by deadline yesterday, local sources confirmed the battalion is readying itself for an overseas deployment

The force is expected to be part of Operation Astute, which is the Australian Defence Force's continuing operation for peace and stability inTimor-Leste.

A multi-national force consisting of more than 500 soldiers is in Timor-Leste at the moment, including a large contingent of New Zealanders.

It means the 41st could make its own Anzac tradition once it arrives.

The battalion has started its pre-deployment training, which will take about two months, and it is believed the force will depart in June. …
