CHARITY chiefs who combine good work with sport have been nominated for an award.

The SAFC Foundation has been shortlisted for the Professional Sport Club Community Programme of the Year Award. The award is being organised by the Sport and Recreation Alliance.

The charity, which was set up 10 years ago, works with youngsters in the community to engage them in sport and healthy lifestyle as well as stressing the importance of education.

SAFC Foundation chief executive Lesley Spuhler said: "We're overjoyed to have been recognised by the Sport and Recreation Alliance at the 2011 Sport Club of the Year Awards.

"To be recognised as a leader in community engagement and achievement across all sports is a testament to the support given by Sunderland AFC, our donors and funders, and the staff who work so hard to keep us at the forefront of our field."

Sport and Recreation Alliance chair Brigid Simmonds hopes that the awards and commendations will encourage elite clubs to do even more within their communities. …
