JACK Colback was born in Killingworth 21 years ago. Even so, it is Wearside, not Tyneside, he calls home. It is why the redhaired midfielder will be prouder than most if he pulls on a red-and-white striped shirt today.

Colback's full Premier League debut for Sunderland came at Birmingham City's St Andrews last week. The commitment and quality he showed that day may earn him another, at home to Wigan Athletic this afternoon.

In an era when most top-flight sides are overstocked with footballers whose devotion to the cause can be called into question, Colback will be as desperate to win as those chewing their nails on the terraces. He hopes they can help him.

"You feel the passion of the crowd every time you play, and it's great to be playing for your hometown club, so to speak," says the youngster who moved to Wearside at an early age.

"I have been here since I was 10, so it's as good as, so it's just great to play for them.

"It's just unfortunate the way it has been going at the minute. …
