After several elderly women's purses were stolen at supermarkets in Ponte Vedra Beach and elsewhere, St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar will meet with residents at Publix sites next month to discuss the crimes.

In addition to the monthlong outreach program, St. Johns will work with other agencies in hopes of nabbing a purse snatcher, said sheriff's spokesman Chuck Mulligan.

Even before the purses were stolen recently at the Sawgrass Village Publix, Walmart and elsewhere, Shoar had planned to meet with residents who aren't members of community groups visited by the sheriff, Mulligan said. Crime prevention deputies will also attend the meetings.

All the meetings will take place at Publix supermarkets. Here's the schedule:

- Saturday, May 7 - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Julington Creek Village Publix, 450 Florida 13; 2 to 4 p.m. at the Publix at 2750 Racetrack Road.

- Saturday, May 21 - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Publix at Nocatee, 120 Market Side Ave.

- Sunday, May 22 - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., St. Augustine Shores Publix, 4255 U.S. 1 S.

- Saturday, May 28 - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Publix at the Beaches, 1033 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach.

- Sunday, May 29 - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Publix at Sawgrass, 600 Sawgrass Village Drive.

"We reached out to the Publix because it's where a lot of people go to shop on the weekend," Mulligan said. "Publix made the space available."

People will be able to ask Shoar about the department and learn how to protect themselves from people like a purse thief who struck at the Sawgrass Publix.

"He's not done this in the past," Mulligan said. "It's something we felt should be done. This is a way for citizens to voice their concerns."

Because many people work Monday through Friday, it's hard to meet with them to hear their concerns, Shoar said. …
