Crucial Errors Cost Titans

LUCKY there wasn't anything handy for me to throw because if there had been, we'd be looking for a new television for the Laffranchi household this week.

I'm talking about the Eels grabbing the match-winning try in the dying seconds to beat the Titans. Despite not playing the best of football, I thought we had done enough for a much-needed victory.

So when Eels' Shane Shackleton managed to get his big paws on the pill after a Daniel Mortimer bomb had bounced under the cross bar and plant it for a try, I nearly lost it.

Sure there was a cushion handy to chuck at the box but thankfully I was able to control my emotions and just utter aJolly bad luck, old chapsa.

It really was cruel to go so close to snatching our third win of the season and I really felt for John Cartwright and the rest of the Titans mob.

On reflection, we didn't really lose the game at the death a we should have had the match parcelled up well before Mortimer and Shackleton did their thing.

A few crucial errors and a couple of poor options allowed the Eels to stick close to us on the scoreboard.

In a previous article, I mentioned that the gargantuan youngster, Ryan James, was destined for a successful career as a rugby league prop forward.

The big fella a 192cm and around 116kg (and I think he's still growing) a showed me enough last week to indicate my prediction was spot on.

Ryan looked a bit tentative early on, not really smashing into the defensive line with his rushes and becoming easy meat for the Eels tacklers.

However, about midway through the half, Ryan latched onto a nice pass and ploughed towards the tryline, carrying four side-on tacklers for about 10 metres before coming to a halt.

That burst gave him a lot of confidence and thereafter he let the Eels defenders know he was going to make his mark in big-time footy. …
